Kabir Bhajan

Acharyanet is happy to release a lesson from Dr Sriram Parasuram teaching a beautiful Kabir Bhajan. The rendition is based on a Hindustani Raag – a combintation of Raag Bihag and Bilaval. Shri Raghava Krishna , a talented singer has participated in the lesson as a student. Dr Sriram meticulously explains the literal and spiritual significance of the lyrics before proceeding to teach each verse. Students will find numerous references to voice culture techniques throughout the lesson. Dr. Sriram provides numerous tips on expression of lyrics with import, strong adherence to pitch correctness, proper articulation, and useful exercises to build voice flexibility and range.

A synopsis of the poem with lyrics are given below. The original tune was composed by Pandit Kumar Gandharva.

In this poem, Kabir breaks the duality of the Supreme and Self with beautiful expression.

Avadhuta Yugan Yugan Hum Yogi – (Oh unattached being, I am a Yogi for many eons)
Avayna Jay Mitaina Kabahun, Sabad Anahat Bhogi (I neither come nor go, I never perish, I experience the boundless Supreme)

Subhi Thor Jamat Humri, Sub Hi Thor Pur Mela (Everywhere in all directions, I see only myself in the fixed and diffused form)
Hum Sub May, Sub Hai Hum May,Hum Hai Bahuri Akela (I am in everyone and everyone is in me but I am utterly alone)
