Celestial Ragas – the exquisite Bhairavi
Some ragas have lived through thousands of years while a few others have been discovered or borrowed from other cultures recently. Ragas like Shahana, Begada, Saveri, Nayaki, Ahiri, Yadukulakambhodhi, Mukhari, Reetigowla, Devagandhari and Bhairavi are peerless and represent the core beauty of Carnatic music.
The series Celestial Ragas, is about projecting and preserving the splendor of such ragas with an approach that blends entertainment with education and excellence. The idea is to explore the aesthetic and technical dimensions of these ragas, with expert analyses from stalwart musicians of different generations ranging from Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, D K Pattamal to Chitravina N Ravikiran, and also to present a selection of brilliant compositions in the chosen raga.
This production is the second in the series, following ‘The Brilliance of Begada’. It aims to reveal the myriad hues of Bhairavi, covering the workds of master composers like Tyagaraja, Muttuswamy Dikshitar, Shyama Shashtri, Oottukkadu Venkata Kavi, Kshetragna, Pallavi Sheshaiyer, and Patnam Subramanya Iyer.
The Ensemble
Vintage Virtuosos is a unique ensemble founded by Ravikiran in 1991, to project masterpieces of Carnatic music with a different approach. A combination of voices and instruments, this group endeavors to practice, perfect and preserve these compositions through concerts, lecture -demonstrations and similar activities. This album features Shri Chitravina Ganesh, Smt Lata Ravikiran, and Smt Savita Narasimhan on the vocals, Smt Akkarai Subhalakshmi on the violin, Shri Murthy on the flute, Shri Neyveli R Narayanan on the mrdangam and Shri N Guruprasad on the ghatam.
