Annamacharya and Bhadrachala Ramadas Compositions
Tallapaka Annamacharya was a 15th-century Hindu saint and the earliest known Indian musician to compose songs called sankirtanas in praise of the Lord Venkateswara. Although he is said to have composed over 32,000 kirtanas only 12,000 or so were discovered. The late Dr M Balamuralikrishna set to tune as many as 800 of these compositions and the legendary singer, M.S Subhalakshmi also helped popularized many of these compositions through her attractive renditions.
Bhadrachala Ramdas was a 17th century composer and a devotee of Lord Ram. He was instrumental in constructing a Ram temple at Bhadrachalam for which he was incarcerated for the charge of appropriating funds that were due to the local ruler. Legend has it that God himself came to his rescue and repaid his debt to liberate him.
