Learn the popular Khamas Swarajathi, Sambashiva from guru Shri Chitravina N Ravikiran in this video lesson. The notation is provided in the Perfecting Carnatic Music Level 1 e-book.
After the initial introduction to the Kamas Tiruppugazh, Iravupahar, this Swarajathi, will help you perfect Kamas even further.
Although Swarajathis are normally taught before Varnams, this particular one is more difficult than traditional Varnams. The structure of the swara-sahitya charanams of swarajathis are similar to that of the Thyagaraja Pancharatnams or the OVK Saptaratna krithis and hence are a great precursor to learning these masterpieces. In particular, this Swarajathi also introduces students to gati bedham or tempo/gait change in the fifth charanam. The rest of it is composed in the third speed i.e. four notes per beat. This automatically implies that students have practiced their initial varisais in the third speed before moving on to these compositions! Swarajathis can be either devotional or romantic in nature. The Khamach swarajathi is in praise of Lord Shiva, and has been composed in Sanskrit.
