Oothukkadu Venkata Kavi (also known as Oothukkadu Venkatasubba Iyer) was a renowned composer from the 17th century, who created several masterpieces mainly in the Sanskrit and Tamil languages. He used the Nattai raga in one of his Saptaratna krithis (seven songs, that are termed as seven gems), Bhajanamruta. This composition, is on Lord Krishna, is a homage by the composer to the great personalities such as the Azhwars, Nayanmars and Kumaras, as well as Ramanuja, Puranadaradasa and Tulsidasa, irrespective of creed or sect. The reference to Tulasidasa is very enlightening in the dating of Venkata Kavi as he is the last historical figure mentioned by the composer.
