How Does One Handle Voice Changes During Adolesence for Male Singers?

04 May 2018
Question from Student:
Hari AUM Sir
During adolescence (normally between 12-15 years of age) the boys experience a change in their voice texture(from sweet to a little harsher).
What is advised to them – should they stop singing or continue to sing even with all their discomforts and vocal chords strain?
Looking forward to your advice🙏🏼

It is a challenge for people who are going through a voice transformation. They should avoid performing at that stage but can continue to practice at home. They can progressively drop the shruti, but in consultation with a good Guru. The pitch may gradually drop and this may take a few months or even a year. They must be careful with their voice and not strain in the higher octaves. They can focus on more karvais (sustained notes) and slow songs.
